In the 1960s Native Americans defended a series of treaties with the United States between 1854 and 1855. Many well-known activist groups and concerned individuals joined the struggle, which featured the confrontational drama of the Native American "fish-in" protests... ultimately, the decisions of non-native judges and the influence of public opinion all proved crucial in upholding the rights of the tribes in Washington and bringing the issue of Native American treaty rights to the forefront of the civil rights movement.
