Citing Zines

Elements to Look for:

  • Creator: Who made the zine?
  • Title of Zine: What's it called?
  • Issue or volume: Like magazines, many zines are published as serials. Each zine may constitute an issue, and a run of issues constitutes a volume. Do you see any issue or volume information on the zine?
  • Date published: When was the zine created?

APA Style:

  • In-Text Citation: (Creator, Year of publication)

    • Whenever possible use the author's last name.
    • If no author name is present, use the title instead.
    • If the author uses a pseudonyms or online username, use that name in lieu of a last name.
    • To quote from a zine, add the page number to the end of your in-text citation like this: (Creator, Year, p.##)
  • Reference List Entry: Author Last Name, First Initial. (Year of Publication). Title [Zine]. Volume(Issue Number).

    • If the zine is digital, include a link to the zine after the last period.

Chicago Style Citations:

  • Notes and Bibliography Style:

    • Footnote (Note): Author's first name and last name, Title of Zine, volume or issue number, (City of publication, year of publication), page number(s).
    • Footnote (Shortened Note): Author's last name, Title of Zine, page number.
    • Bibliography Entry: Author's Last Name, First Name. Title of Zine. Zine. Volume or issue number. City of publication: Year of publication
  • Author-Date Style:

    • In-Text Citations: (Author Last Name Year Published, pg number)
    • Reference List Entry: Author Last Name, First Name. Year Published. Title of Zine. Zine. Volume or Issue Number. City of Publication.

MLA Style Citations:

  • In-Text Citation: (Author Last Name page number)

    • No last name? Refer to the author how they refer to themselves. So if their name is presented as web handle or pseudonym, use that.
    • No author listed? Cite the title of the zine instead. Or if an organization or group is listed as creators, use that for the author field.
  • Works Cited Page: Author's Last Name, First Name, "Title of Zine." [Zine], Volume or issue number. City of publication. Year of publication.
